Getting Out of Our Own Way

A workshop about loosening the hold of our inner critics

Do you ever feel like there’s something in the way of your creative flow?

Writer’s block — you know it, we know it, we all struggle with it. Sometimes we break through it, and other times… that’s what we’ll explore in this workshop.

In these five sessions, we’ll use writing and discussion to get to know our inner critics and what makes them feel so powerful. Then we’ll go deeper to explore to develop skills and tools to bring momentum back to our creativity.

We’ll use contemplative practices, art and visualization to learn about ourselves and create counter-techniques that we can use any time writer’s block shows back up.

This workshop is based on neuroscience research and grounded in writing and life coaching practices. It will be deep personal work, come prepared to shed a few tears.

Here’s how it works:

Each week, we’ll gather on Zoom to use writing prompts, images, and sensory information to connect to our experiences and beliefs about creativity, and find new ways to move our writing forward when we feel resistance.

We’ll share what we write and provide each other with encouraging feedback to keep moving us forward.

    • Are at any stage in their writing, from “absolute beginner” to Pulitzer Prize. (Inner critics can nab us all!)

    • Are very motivated by self-exploration, connection and listening. With a small group of 7, full participation is requested.

    • Are open and curious to explore their more shadowy and hidden resistances for the sake of moving through them.

    • Love the idea of sustained time to explore, express, and connect to others.

    • Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.

    • Writing tools and practices to carry you forward.

    • A bunch of short pieces written in first-draft form.

    • Clarity around what to do when you feel stuck, and specifically, what will work for you in particular.

    • Writing peers whose work you are invested in.

    • That sweet feeling of having gone somewhere and done something for yourself.

    • Writing critique. This is a loving, nurturing environment for all writing voices and styles.

    • Lectures on how to write “better.” This workshop is about getting it down, not making it flawless.

    • Written feedback on all your writing.

    • Therapy. We’ll be exploring our inner selves, and it may feel therapeutic; however, this workshop is about the writing and the tools we can use to come back to our writing. If you feel the desire to explore these themes with the help of a therapist, we recommend that wholeheartedly.

I appreciated this class so much! It was a bright spot in my week and I can't stop recommending it and talking about it. Sophia was so kind and tender with our open hearts in this class it was inspiring. She knew just what to say to ease my worries and I feel like she did the same for my classmates too. You have all built a very special space (even virtually) that I'm thrilled to be a part of. Thank you!!
