Permission Slip

Writing as a doorway to softness and self-compassion

Writing can help us remember how to soften.

In the past few years, we have all been pushed outside our comfort zones, finding new depths of our resilience and fortitude. We’ve cared for others. We’ve adapted. We’ve reinvented ourselves.

This program is a big, bright invitation to exhale. We’ll step out of giving and into receiving. We’ll use writing, mindfulness and word-play to come back to our hearts and our spirits, and give them what they need.

Self-compassion doesn’t always come naturally. We need a process for it — a way to slow down and fill our cups. We may also need permission and playfulness. That’s exactly what this class is for. We’ll use writing as an unabashed permission slip to tend to our tiredness and fuel the fires still burning inside.

Here’s how it works:

We’ll meet on Zoom six times, with 7 participants and 1 facilitator. We’ll start each session with a short mindfulness activity to sink into our bones, then we’ll do several writes together, exploring where we are in this moment, and how we can access more of what we need.

The writing will be playful and also reflective. As always, tears are welcome! Participants will have lots of choice with the prompts and full control over where the writing goes.

We’ll explore permission to slow down, to let go of rules, to imagine our futures newly, and more. We’ll leave each session with a specific self-care experiment to try out before the next session.

    • Want to slow down and reconnect to their voices and others.

    • Are ready to love themselves up on the page.

    • Don’t need a lot of instruction to get started writing.

    • Are ready to connect to their bodies, stories and feelings right now.

    • Are hungry for a break from caring for other people, and want to tune into their own needs.

    • Thrive in small, cozy groups.

    • Feel aligned with our fundamental beliefs.

    • Deep breaths and softer shoulders.

    • Poems and passages to help you reconnect to inner stillness anytime.Lots of new writing.

    • A renewed sense of your writing voice and your unique gifts as a writer.

    • Writing peers whose work you are invested in.

    • Critique or competition. We’re all about the love.

    • Strict rules on “how to write”. We’ll work on developing your writing skills but we don’t subscribe to the idea that there’s one way to create powerful work.

    • Pressure to write things you don’t want to write. We go where the joy is.

What people are saying:

The general theme of "permission" went even beyond what I'd hoped for this class. So much of my writing gets caught on "shoulds" and having a specific permission designated for each class allowed me to become my own cheerleader again. It was a great class for those of us who needed a big group hug and to motivate and encourage each other's writing. Sophia just shines in this class. You can feel her mindfulness/healing work background as she graciously holds space for others. She is also just such an enthusiastic coach and makes you feel empowered to keep going. Her joy is radiant!
